How do you smell?

Smells like victory for Melanie Katcher

I want to focus on how you smell. You might be wondering why, right?

It is quite common to see signs around which signal “this is a scent-free office” or something similar. The rise of allergies and sensitivities makes this necessary. Funny enough, I am one of those people who is highly sensitive to strong smells. It gives me a headache and is incredibly overwhelming.

But what does that mean for you?

How you smell is part of who you are so please consider what a clean scent means for you and leave strong perfume or cologne at home. That can also include scented hair products or lotions.

Is that all that smells in a workplace? Certainly not. Inauthenticity also stinks so keep that in mind. You know, the people who are clearly trying too hard to be someone they are not. People can smell that a mile away!

There might be other areas of your life you think might be smelly. I always like to clean up those areas first – like the pile of rags in the laundry room which are crying out to be washed or the compost under the sink which is begging to be taken out. Or maybe it is a bad habit you need to tackle.

Whatever it is, stay true to who you are, and keep the smell to a minimum.
